William H. White died at 5:30 at a St. Joseph hospital after a long illness. Eighty-four years old, he was associated with the St. Joseph Lumber Co., for 54 years, retiring Dec. 31, 1954. For many of these years he was its vice-president. He relinquished that office a year before his retirement and was on the board of directors.
Mr. White was well known in this city and had many friends here. Born in Easton, Md., Oct. 26, 1874, he came to St. Joseph in 1900. He was married in 1919 to Miss Agnes Kennard, a member of a prominent family here. He was a Scottish Rite 32d degree Mason. He was a member of Chapter No. 14, R.A.M. and St. Joseph Council N. 9, R. And S.M. He was a past eminent commander of the de Payens commandery No. 4, Knights Templar. Mr. White was the oldest past potentate of Moila Temple Shrine in this city. He became potentate in 1916.
During World War I Mr. White was in charge of Y.M.C.A. canteen in LeMans, France.
Born of Quaker parents, Mr. White was also a Quaker, but there were no Quaker groups in St. Joseph. So, when he came here, Mr. White became a member of the Christ Episcopal Church. A junior warden of the church, he was on its vestry for many years and was active in its affairs.
His survivors are his wife, of the home, Victorian Court Apartments, and two sisters, Mrs. C.E. Trickle of Moylan, Pa., and Mrs. Kenneth Byerly of Washington D.C. The body is at Meierhoffer-Fleeman's. |
